Some might only recognize Qatar for its hosting of the upcoming FIFA 2022 World Cup, or by its popular news outlet Al Jazeera; however, there are a lot of rather interesting aspects and fun facts to learn about the gulf country.
We, at the Town Hotel, have compiled a small list for you to learn more about the wonders that Qatar has to offer.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise with its 124,927 USD per capita, placing the country above European number one – Luxemburg and even above the Chinese territory of Macau. No wonder they have the best airlines, and are building nine new stadiums for the 2022 World Cup
THE SAFEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD
Only when referencing natural disasters. According to several UN reports, there is a 0.1 percent chance of earthquakes in Qatar, making it the number one safest country in the world.
HOME TO ONE OF THE BEST AIRLINES
Qatar’s own airline, Qatar Airways, recently won ‘The Best Airline of the Year’ award for a record-breaking 5th time.
Qatar Airways have won four prestigious prizes at this year’s 2019 Skytrax World Airline Awards, including the highest accolade of ‘World’s Best Airline’ – becoming the only airline in the competition’s history to win it five times (2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2019).
BIG CITY LIFE
Nearly all residents live in the city. Doha is one of the most urbanised places in the world, with 99 percent of residents counting themselves as town or city dwellers. Only a handful of territories, including Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bermuda, can top it.
Qatar is a very rich country due to its mineral resources such as oil and natural gas. Qatar has the third largest gas reserves in the world.
This allows locals and inhabitants of the country to enjoy all kinds of tropical and foreign food and goods all year round!
PEARLS, PEARLS, PEARLS!
While pearl fishing was previously vital to Qatar’s economy, it is celebrated as a part of Qatari culture. Annual pearl diving competitions and cultural celebrations are held.
The four-day Senyar pearl diving and fishing competition recently boasted more than 350 participants, navigating between Fasht and Katara Beach on traditional ships.
The annual Qatar Marine Festival is a free event that hosts not only pearl diving demonstrations but also a seal show, dancing waters, food, an elaborate musical play, and miniature golf.
